Engineering and environmental consulting

Water Technology is an employee-owned Australian consulting company that provides scientific insight and innovative solutions to help our clients manage a broad range of water and environmental challenges.  Our team is dedicated to work that improves communities and the environment by combining planning, science, engineering and practical design.

Together, our team provides specialised skills across all aspects of surface water, groundwater, coastal, marine and environmental management.  Our multidisciplinary approach allows us to tackle almost any issue in the landscape, in both natural and built environments. With our scientific expertise and years of experience, we are able to intimately understand systems and challenges. Our recommendations include practical solutions.

Our history

Water Technology began in 2020, when Dr Andrew McCowan founded Water Technology in a room in a suburban home in Victoria. Andrew’s vision for Water Technology was for it to be a place that does great work that makes a difference, but also a workplace that values and cares for its people. He also always strongly promoted innovation within Water Technology and importantly gave people permission to try new techniques or methods.

Andrew was joined by Steve Clark in 2001 and Warwick Bishop in 2003.  The team continued to grow and established a vision to provide expert insight and practical solutions for surface water, groundwater, coastal and environmental challenges across Australia and beyond.  We now have a team of more than 190 people spread across Australia and New Zealand.

Our founder – Dr Andrew McCowan

Andrew was born and raised in Melbourne in a family with a history of engineering and innovation. He developed a passion for water and the environment at an early age through sailing and summers at the beach.  Andrew completed a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours at Monash University in 1974 and soon after  started his professional career as a coastal engineer.  Andrew’s particular areas of expertise included the application of advanced numerical modelling  techniques to flood hydraulics, coastal engineering and environmental investigations.  In the early 1990’s, Andrew was one of the first proponents of  two-dimensional flood modelling through the adaptation of coastal models. He also advanced some of the first “rainfall on grid” modelling applications in Australia.

Andrew retired in 2025 following a significant contribution to the industry over his career that spanned more than five decades.
