Exchanging Knowledge and Experience on Community Led Re-location
Last Friday (12th April) marked a significant moment as Water Technology hosted Manaaki Tairāwhiti from New Zealand in Grantham. Their visit from New Zealand has been a significant highlight, showcasing the keen interest in our leading-edge methods of managed retreat and community led re-location.
Embodying a powerful partnership between local iwi and social sector leaders, Manaaki Tairāwhiti is dedicated to nurturing social wellbeing through the lens of Māori values. Their focus on ensuring a flourishing future for all Tairāwhiti whānau (family members) has been truly inspiring and we are very keen to learn more.
Last week in Grantham, they wrapped up their insightful tour, having explored and shared in the successes and learnings from our own community’s experiences. This visit will undoubtedly enrich their strategies for building community resilience back home in Gisborne, New Zealand.
The scale of the Grantham redevelopment and relocation is inspiring. Words and pictures do not do it justice, so we were joined on the tour by Grantham locals John and Garry who lived through the experience of the 2011 flood event. Their stories made a lasting impression.
This visit leaves us with a treasure trove of lessons and the cementing of a partnership that transcends borders. The Manaaki Tairāwhiti team’s journey with us has been a testament to the strength in shared knowledge and united efforts.
Thanks to the NSW Reconstruction Authority for hosting the NZ contingent in the Northern Rivers region as part of their visit in Australia.
