Innovation Challenge: What does flood resilience look like at the Olympics?

A workshop was hosted by the Young Floodplain Managers in Brisbane last week prior to the commencement Floodplain Management Australia 2024 conference.

The workshop involved an Innovation Challenge where teams worked collaboratively to develop solutions to the question of “What does flood resilience look like in the context of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games?”

Teams were paired with an experienced industry mentor, and they worked together to optioneer measures to manage potential flood scenarios for an Olympic event location. Knowledge was shared from expert presenters who recounted their experiences in preparing large events for potential flood situations.

Attendees were challenged to think outside their comfort zone by professionals who specialise in disaster management and planning.

Teams then pitched their ideas before a panel of accomplished industry experts.

A special thanks to Australian Olympians Jess Fox and Tim Anderson for sharing their insights into the impacts of flooding on Olympic venues with Water Technology’s Steven Molino in preparation for the workshop.
